Could Conscription Be the Answer?

According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary an autocracy is defined as "a government in which one person possesses unlimited power." (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/autocracy) An example of an autocratic government would be the one that is run by Fi
del Castro in Cuba which is just ninety miles off Florida's coast. The U.S. had of course overthrown dissident governments before the prime model and the most glowing example of this during the Eisenhower Administration was in 1954 when the government of Castilla Armas a more pro-American, anti-communist regime was put in place in order to spread more democracy and economic freedom within Latin America. It took a mere ten days for the C.I.A. orchestrated revolution to succeed in Guatemala.

Of course the United States planned and attempted to execute a foray into Cuba with the help of Batistanos (basically capitalists) to attempt to overthrow the Castro government and potentially set up some semblance of a democracy or a free and just society much like what the United States government is attempting to do in Iraq. In contrast according to the same dictionary, a democracy is defined as "a government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised either directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held elections" (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/democracy)

An example of a democracy other then our own country, the United States of America would of course be Turkey. Turkey can be mentioned as an example of a country within the Middle East who exercises democratic principles although on shaky ground, which is the way Iraq may end up operating things for quite some time. Turkey is officially considered to be a secular nation, meaning that it has some sort of wall between the rulings of the state and the doctrine that is brought by religious organizations within its borders. Iraq is a country that strives to be free of religious prejudices and to promote diversity in canon thought, however it is questionable as to whether they will be able to achieve this goal.

Good article. Iraq is probably one of the few states where "democracy" can take hold. Iraq had a large middle-class and good infrastructure before Sadam took power so there has been tastes. However, on a larger scale I just can't imagine how democracy and Islam blend.

There's nothing simple about Iraq. My nephew is serving there and I'm concerned about him and all of the other servicemen and women. Great article!
