All parents wish for their children to be responsible and to do their share of household chores. Kids are easier to motivate on their early years when what are needed are just simple praises, hugs and
candies after piling their clothes or arranging their toys. The difficult stage will be during their teen years when they will not respond to orders anymore and will do things on their own. This is one of the battling issues of adolescence.

Lack of motivation is common among teenagers. They can consistently find excuses so as not to do chores. They can even sleep continuously without worrying of unfinished chores. How then will you motivate your child to complete their assigned tasks willingly? Here are some of the tips that any parents can use to gain their teens' cooperation:

1. Negotiate with your teen. Getting your teens' involvement in choosing the chores is a good step. Teenagers are constantly irritated of the "Do this" nagging from their parents because they often feel that they are being forced to do things they don't like. Try to present a list of chores they can choose from. Your teen may hate the idea of washing the dishes but is happy on weeding the gardens or vacuuming the floors. Letting your teens choose their chores is also a form of motivation for him to complete the task he chose. It can also be a way for your child to get involve in the process and create a plan of action to complete a task faster.

2. Give consequences for unfinished chores but don't be harsh. Having punishments for an unfinished or a "half-baked" job can also motivate your teens to do their tasks well. There are also times when punishments occur naturally like if your teenager failed to collect all laundry, he will not be able to wear his favorite shirt.

3. Keep the chores interesting and give breaks between chores. Present different techniques to finish a chore so that they will not get bored by routines. Allow your teens to take a break in between long chores. Reward your teen after a well done chore and show them that they are appreciated.
