Did you ever where chocolate came from? Did you ever wondered why so many people love this tasty treat? Well read on and find out!


Chocolate has a number of raw and processed foods that originate from the seed of a tropical cacoa tree. It is a popular ingredient used in many confections such as ice cream, pies, cakes, cookies and much more. Chocolate has become to most popular flavor throughout history.

The Mesoamerican Civilization had created this wonderful treat from cacoa beans. Later on, it was cultivated by pre-Columbian civilizations such as the Maya and Aztec. The Maya and the Aztec had used it as a basic component in a variety of sauces and beverages. They grinded the cocoa beans and mixed it with water to produce a bevarage. At the time, this was only reserved for the Mesoamerican world. Did you know that chocolate is made from the fermented, then roasted and grounded from the pods of the tropical cocoa tree? The beans have a very bitter taste which is known as chocolate or cocoa.

Today, chocolate bars are made from the combinations of solid cocoa, fats and sugar to releave it's bitter taste. It is often formed is the shape as bars, animals, people or other objects. Chocolate can also be made into drinks such as hot chocolate and hot cocoa.

There are several types of chocolate today as you know of. Unsweetened chocolate is pure chocolate also used as baking chocolate. It is unadulterated and has a very strong bitter flavor to it. Most people today use it in cakes, cookies or other desserts. Dark chocolate consists of 15% concentration of chocolate liquor and 35% of cocoa solids. Normally, this type is called "Plain chocolate". Milk chocolate is made with milk powder or condensed milk. It has a 10% concentration of chocolate liquor and a 25% cocoa solids. Milk chocolate is the most popular. Semisweet chocolate is mainly used for baking purposes and has a high sugar content. Bittersweet chocolate is mostly all chocolate liquor with a little bit of sugar added into it. White chocolate is a confection based on cocoa butter without the cocoa solids.
