Ok, I have seen and read about the "Delaware Plan", "Regional Primary System" and the "American Plan/California Plan", and I have to say that although each seeks to fix the current primary system, I believe my much simpler approach will actually get it done.

Two-dozen states have moved, or have proposed moving their primaries to February 5th, 2008 which means for all intent and purposes that both parties candidates will be decided earlier than ever before. The coventional wisdom behind the states moving their primaries is to "offset" the early influences that Iowa and New Hampshire represent, and the momentum that they sometimes unfairly give to candidates that clearly won't be around for the long haul. The only redeeming part of this is the fact that it sometimes it forces the perceived "front runners" to step up their game a bit and actually talk about issues, not just about "spin."

There long has been many a critic of the current system, and even though there will be no permanent fix in place for the 2008 primary system, the Center for Voting and Democracy has issued thre prosed outlines, the above mentioned Delaware Plan, Regional Primary System and the American Plan/California Plan. Each proposal has its own merits and I encourage you to do your own research to get additional details on each and measure them against my much more simple approach of treating the primary season just the same as a the General Election, a one day, winner take all event day that decides each aprties candidate early enough for an aggressive debate season to be put in place around the country and also the candidates will have the luxury, or curse, of time to spend their goals for the office of president as opposed to all their efforts and resources contrasting themselevs from their opponents.

Takeaways
  • Three proposals have been published for re-tooling the presidential primary season
  • My personal idea for simplfying the system
Did You Know?
Twenty four states have moved, or proposed moving up their primaries to February 8th 2008, closer to New Hampshire and Iowa.

The National Primary you propose would keep the smaller early candidates (such as a Bill Clinton) out of the race. That's why I don't like it. If you're looking at the primary proposals, check out http://www.freewebs.com/primaryschemes It has an analysis of those three proposals (American, Delaware, and Regional), plus some other stuff.
