Introduction to This Hardy Plant

Poppies are among one of the most popular flowers of gardeners around the world for their beauty unified with astonishing strength. The poppy family (Papveraceae) is compiled with numerous amount of species that are annual, biennial or perennial flowers. These flowers are usually cup-shaped
with crumbled or fluted petals. The amazingly clear cut colors are white, orange, yellow, deep red, pink, coral, rose, lavender and blue. Although each individual flower only lasts a few days, each plant supplies many blooms each year.

When planting a poppy seed, it is important to plant the seeds directly into the garden. Poppy plants do not like to be disturbed so it is not suggested to start the seedling in the house and then replant it when the warmer months are set into place. If transplanting these plants, it is important to make sure the entire root is removed and placed into the sowed garden. When there is a choice between purchasing poppy seeds or a small plant, it is wiser to choose the seeds since they can grow in one location and not be transported.

1. California Poppy: (Eschscholzia Californica) This poppy is generally seen in masses spreading across the California hillsides, therefore it received its name. Its bright yellowish-orange flowers are the main color however some gardeners have come up with shades of cream, yellow, pink and even rosy red. The silky petals are smooth in the single-flowered species and cultivated species have delicately fluted petals. This species tends to like full sun and a well-drained soil, although can last in sandy or gravelly locations. It is commonly seen in rock gardens, retaining walls and containers.
