Hoosier Horse Park: An Equestrian Masterpiece in Nineveh, Indiana

You might not expect to see horses on or near a military training base, but if you travel to Nineveh, Indiana you will. Hoosier Horse Park, an equestrian masterpiece, is located in Johnson County Park. Johnson County Park near Nineveh,IN also houses Camp Attebury,a military training base. Johnson County Park is located about 20 miles south of Indianapolis off of State Road 252.

Hoosier Horse Park hosts over 60 events each year with more than 18,000 people converging on the 200 acre park. Built in 1986, as Indianapolis Pan American Games organizers needed a place to host the equestrian events that they were holding. This horse park grew from a small local riding ring with a few small storage buildings to an equestrian masterpiece park.

The horse park contains a covered show arena, 3 dressage areas, an outdoor practice area, show barns, stables, 2 large stadiums, jumping areas, more than 300 stalls (which are open to rent to house horses at a rate of $9.00 per night) and camping. Riders are free to ride on any of the park's grassy areas and roads during the day. The arena can be rented for $10.00 per hour per rider during the week. A beautifully landscaped Level 4 cross-country course is also available and can be rented for $20.00 per rider for any Indiana Eventing Association member and $35.00 to the general public.

On any given weekend, you might find western shows, high school rodeos, barrel racing, horse training, cross-country riding , a state competition, a training seminar, or even horse trials going on at the park. This year the Indiana Ranch Horse Association has chosen Hoosier Horse Park to host it's annual show.

Members of the Indiana Eventing Association use the park on a regular basis. They also host the training seminars and schooling. Trails of Hope, a non-profit organization also uses the park during the week for therapy riding for the physically disabled. Based in Columbus, the group wanted to use the park as it a more central location.
