Nelly Furtado stole the show at the Juno Awards Sunday, taking home five Junos including Artist of the Year. Furtado, who also hosted the Junos, the Canadian equivalent to the Grammys, won awards for best single, best album, artist of the year, pop album of the year, and was voted the fan's choice during the broadcast.
The 28 year old singer and Canada native's five awards bested Toronto punk rockers Billy Talent, who picked up two awards for best group and best rock album, for "Billy Talent II."
Billy Talent was the only other nominee to win multiple awards, and their success may signify a changing of the guard in the Canadian rock scene, replacing long time favorites the Tragically Hip.
"I'm just happy to be here and humbled," Furtado said as she received her fan choice award, which is voted on by Canadians.
Furtado also performed a medley of her songs at the show.
She faced strong competition in each category she was nominated in, but was able to sweep them all.
Furtado's album, 'Loose,' has sold about five million copies to this point, and pumped out four top 10 hits, including 'Promiscuous,' which earned her the Juno for best single. Other hits from the album include 'Say it Right' and 'Maneater.' 'Loose' also garnered her a Brit award for best international female solo artist.
The album has been certified platinum in the U.S., U.K., and Australia. It has been certified two times platinum in Switzerland and Germany and three times platinum in Canada. 'Loose' was the top selling album of 2006 in Canada.
Nelly Furtado hit the music scene seven years ago with her debut album 'Whoa, Nelly!,' which was well received. Her next album, her 2003 follow up 'Folklore,' wasn't as popular.
Other winners at the Junos on Sunday include Jacksoul for R&B sould recording and Tomi Swick for best new artist. The Dixie Chicks won for best international album, and dance-rock band Mobile won for best new group of the year.
Besides Furtado, other performers who performed in front of the 13,000 at the Junos were Patrick Watson, Hall of Fame inductee Bob Rock, and Three Days Grace.
