I don't buy into organized religion. I haven't for quite some time. I don't think God cares what my religion is, as long as I believe in Him. This is not to say I don't believe in God. I do believe in God. I do believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. I just don't believe in religion.

I was born and raised as a Catholic. And to some extent, I still consider myself as a Catholic. I'm just a non-practicing Catholic. Meaning, I don't go to church every Week. I go on holidays like Easter and Christmas. I only go on those days because those are the sermons I truly want to hear.

I believe organized religion is not about God. It's a business. It's about money. Every week, I receive a packet of envelopes for donations from the Catholic Church. They collect for a wide variety of things, like the Church upkeep fund, the Catholic School tuition fund, the Catholic School upkeep fund, etc. None of these things have anything to do with God. Every three months, we receive a statement listing our donations for that quarter. Ours always has $0.00. We never use the envelopes. It is no one else's business how much we give to the church. And it is certainly less than the percentage the church "suggests" we donate.

I cannot understand why a religion would ask for a percentage of its member's income. It is like they're saying if one doesn't give a certain percentage of their income, they will not get into Heaven. That is ludicrous. God doesn't care how much money one gives to the church. And why should a member of the congregation, such as myself, give money to a tuition fund when my own children go to the public school? If I were going to give money to any school, it would be to the school my kids attend. Why should I donate to send someone else's child to the Catholic School when the only difference between the two is that one has religion classes?

Mary, in answer to your question. It is exactly what I said. It's how I feel. I don't believe in organized religion. I don't buy into it. I believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. I just don't believe in churches. I don't need a church to pray. God hears my prayers no matter where I am. I've always believed that. I really don't think God cares where you are when you pray. He's in my heart and my soul belongs to Him. I don't need to go to church or believe in a religion to prove that.

Believe in God and denouce religon. Many of you have confused GOD with religon and mistakingly combine the two. Religon falls at the feet of GOD, just cut out the middleman and pray to GOD not religon and all your prayers will have a greater force. As religon has divided us but one day wisemen will bring us back together again. Love God.

however the IDEA of church is necessary, at least for the Christian faith. Christianity is not meant to be gone through alone, we need to fellowship of other believers. seek out a church that will provide that. most churches will ask you to tithe, and i see no problem in that because its BIBLICAL. don't think the church is telling you to tithe, the Word of God is. feel free to message or comment back or whatever. i used to feel the same things you are. :)

first of all, WOW. john doe, do you have any grasp on what Buddhism is? how can you say God is in your heart but you lean towards Buddhism? in the Buddhism faith there is NO God. grammatically, this is a well written article, but i would suggest you look at more than just what you have experienced at your own church. i feel that a lot of the article is being written with a very shallow viewpoint on overall organized religion in the world. a lot of your points are very opinionated, and i am wondering how much research you did before writing it, especially that last paragraph. you say you want your sons to choose for themselves which religion to follow. so does that mean it was THEIR decision to be pulled out of the CCD classes? it sounds like it was something you decided to do on your own. i am not approving of the priest's actions, i think HIS priorities were not straight, but your actions and words sound contradictory. and i agree that CHURCH is not necessary, howeve

I thinks you are very brave for sharing your thoughts & views on this subject in such a public manner. I feel I have to applaud you for that. I understand your views & I also understand why others may disagree. But reguardless of what your readers may believe about religion & the church, they should also agree that this is a great topic & well written, Thanks for sharing

Many believers share Judy's feelings and this is what makes the honesty of the article so genuine. The Bible tells us that God loves a cheerful giver. One should never give of time or money under duress. Like being with close friends who "get you," it is important to have validation and direction socially too. One can always give to the charities closest to the heart by way of tithe. But remember even Peter and Paul needed outside direction from time to time so they did not let their own specific personalities get in the way of their work. Good job and thanks for sharing.
