The Greatest Football Game Doesn't Always Live Up to the Hype
The Super Bowl, it is the single greatest sporting event on earth. The NFL, for some 40 years, has poured millions of dollars into marketing their championship game so that the whole world tunes in. TThe most amazing thing about the Super Bowl is that it crosses racial, generation and monetary gaps in society. Every year men, women and especially young people, digest the NFL’s ultimate product and usually they are not disappointed.
This year the Super Bowl turns 40, and the NFL is turning back the clock and reminding everyone about its past glory. The great games, the great plays and, of course, the great Super Bowl performances. But the Super Bowl has not always lived up to the hype, and several times has turned into another boring Sunday afternoon. The NFL won’t remind you of these few instances over the last 40 years, but these contests are an important piece of Super Bowl history.
Throughout the years of Super Bowl madness, there have been some contests that were just not of championship caliber. The result of every Super Bowl does bring joy to the players, coaches and fans of the victorious team, but to the average football fan, who the NFL so desperately reels into watching the big game, these Not-So-Super Bowls turned into Sundays they wished they could have back.
Super Bowl VI: Dallas 24, Miami 3
The Dallas Cowboys won their first Super Bowl in dominating fashion over the Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys put up 352 yards of total offense while holding the Dolphins; a team that would win Super Bowls VII and VIII, to just 185 total offensive yards. The Dolphins committed three turnovers and never challenged Rodger Staubauch as he threw for two touchdowns. The Dolphins’ mere three points remains the lowest point total in Super Bowl history and they still are the only team not to score a touchdown in the game as well.
