My wife and I are notorious for purchasing cheap products. For ninety-nine cents, you can get a handheld can opener. These will last for some time, but they are such a pain in the butt...wrist. Folks, there are left and right handed can openers on the market. Unfortunately, you will not know which is which until you get home. You can thank the cardboard backing for that. Anyhow, I am ambidextrous so I could use either one, however my right hand is stronger since I use it the most. My wife is right handed. She came home one night with one of those left handed can openers, which is pretty hard to get accustomed to. The old can openers were rusting, which is not exactly the best thing to have when you are opening food. I cannot think of anything more unappealing than the thought of rust particles floating around in your tuna fish or tomato soup. That would be a health code violation in any restaurant or other food preparation place.

We also discovered the blades dulled rather rapidly over time. I think we have purchased about 15 can openers over the last 3 years. It was definitely time to make a change. Of course, we head to Wally's World to solve all our houseware problems. The most common model they had in stock were the Hamilton Beach Extra-Tall Can Openers. They were only about twelve dollars, so we figured it was time to give it a try.

I have to admit I am really getting spoiled with all these neat little gadgets. The Hamilton Beach Extra-Tall Can Opener is solid white, which blends in well with the rest of our kitchen. This little device is a godsend. It opens all the cans in the first attempt. It has a magnet to pull the lids right off. The cutting edge comes off easily, so it is a lot easier to clean than the little handhelds. It shuts off automatically, once it completes its task. Finally, this bad boy actually contains a blade sharpener. All of this is included for only around $12, depending where you are shopping.
