Mexican Star Leaves Club America for MLS

After facing off with Chris Rolfe and Justin Mapp only weeks ago in an international match between Mexico and the U.S., Cuauhtemoc Blanco will join his American opposition at the Chicago Fire.

With only six days before Major League Soccer kicks-off its 2007 season, which is highlighted by the new Designated Player rule, the self-designated "Best Mexican Footballer Ever" will leave Club America of Liga Mexicana to play in the U.S. for the first time.

Blanco becomes the third DP signing of the 2007 season following the additions of David Beckham in Los Angeles and Claudio Reyna in New York. However, his presence in the league may overshadow the former-U.S. captain, Reyna.

After successful runs with Necaxa, Veracruz, and Club America, Blanco will likely help draw Mexican soccer fans to the American league, as Paco Palencia, Claudio Suarez, and Juan Pablo Garcia did when they signed with Chivas USA.

Blanco will also help Chicago's young forwards in the attacking end of the field. Chad Barrett and Chris Rolfe will need some experienced leadership to help them find the back of the net this season, as they will be counted on for scoring this year. Support from Blanco in the attacking midfield spot should not only help the rising forwards find the back of the net but should also help them learn.

Although Blanco has some doubters and perhaps enemies in the U.S., after many American fans have endured his display of skill in the CONCACAF rivalry between the U.S. and Mexico, Blanco put his gifts on display in the Club World Cup this year. He may not be the striking power he once was, but his ability to pass, create space, and marshal a team's attack will make the Fire a dominant power in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.

Despite his 124 goals in 312 matches for Club America and 31 goals in 88 caps for the Mexican National Team, Blanco's task will be enormous. A plethora of new talents will flood the league this year and help the league legitimize itself on the world stage.

  • Blanco scored 31 goals in 88 caps for Mexico and 124 goals for Club America in 312 matches.
  • Blanco will join the Chicago Fire as the third Designated Player in the MLS.
  • Other signings include: Luis Tejada, Roberto Brown, Yherland McDonald, Carl Robinson, and Fred.
