Essential oils have some amazing medicinal and therapeutic properties if used properly, but they can also be dangerous if not used properly.

Because essential oils are made from plant extracts, the likelihood of allergic reaction is high, especially for those who are known to have hay fever or other plant based, pollen, or grass type allergies.

There is also the possibility of toxicity when overused or not used properly. It's important to note that essential oils, while having therapeutic properties, are not classified as medications and therefore are not regulated like over the counter drugs would be. Therefore, there is not a requirement to list contraindications on the labels and warnings are also not required.

If you plan to use essential oils for any purpose, including simply using them as a fragrance source, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers.

When using essential oils, whether for aromatherapy or for treating certain conditions, it is important to keep the following in mind:

Do not use essential oils directly on your skin if you are pregnant. While there are some that your doctor may discuss with you to use, unless your doctor or medical professional clearly tells you to use them, stay away from essential oils while pregnant or nursing - period.

Do not use essential oils for aromatherapy on anyone under the age of five and then use caution for essential oil aromatherapy on all children, and it is recommended that essential oils not be used directly on the skin of anyone under the age of twelve.

If using essential oils directly on the skin, a skin patch test should be performed to test for allergic reaction prior to any treatment. This can be accomplished by touching a very small amount of essential oil to the inside of the wrist and waiting 24 hours to see if there is a reaction of any kind. If the skin reacts in any way, such as turning red, blotchy, burning, itchy, swollen, etc, then do not use that particular essential oil for any reason, including aromatherapy.

Never use essential oils near sensitive skin, around the eyes, broken skin, or near mucous membranes.

Oops I forgot to say the other thing, the reason I'm looking is because I got told that lavender is great on problem skin (which is exactly what I've been having since being pregnant) so I thought I'd find out what the web says about using it on your face.... I can appreciate that it can be dangerous but I'd love to know actually why? I mean what is it about the oil that is so potent, is it that it can seep into your body and cause miscarriage? Thats the worst case scenario that I can think of that would be the problem, but how? This is my first time so I don't know much but I want to learn more for the best health of my baby! Does anyone else know why its so bad....?

I was just abit confused because in this article it says not to use essential oils for aromatherapy in children under five and then in another article I found on this site about using lavender to help young ones sleep and relax better the lady describes how she dripped it all on her few months old blanket and around the pillow to help sleep during teething? Is this contradictory or have I misread something? Or is lavender safe? I just want to know facts....?

I have studied herbs for years and use essential oils a lot. You are right on about your warnings.

I had been hearing about Essential Oils a lot lately, but haven't tried them yet... I will after reading this though: "Some essential oils that may cause concentration disruption or cause drowsiness are:" - I could use some help in the sleeping department. Thanks!

Wow, thanks for the warning. This was an excellent article. It definetly deserved it's place on the home page of AC.

Excellent article. While I absolutely adore essential oils and recognize that they truly do have therapeutic uses, I agree with you in that there are dangers that must also be recognized. For example, one time I was burning lemongrass oil in a candle on my patio to ward of insects, and I unknowingly got some of the oil on the tip of my finger. A few minutes later, I went to rub my eye, and let's just say that it was sheer FIRE! I mean, I've gotten things in my eye before like lotions or makeup, but those things are NOTHING compared to how badly the lemongrass stung. Ouch! Just be careful when using essential oils.

Excellent article, though I'm going to pout now because I'm pregnant. I wonder what it says about me that all three of my favorites -- sandalwood, lavender, and ylang-ylang -- are soporific?

I burn aall essential oils I get. My little oil burner works overtime when I can afford to purchase my favorite scents. And cheap they are not. I never use them on my skin or in bathwater. I prefer perfume or cologne. Burning oil is a welcome change to incense and always puts me in a great mood. Another fantastic article and useful information.
