What is it?

A home exchange is swapping your home with someone else; they will live in your house while you live in theirs. You will save money and not have to worry about booking hotels. Typically, exchange part
ners must trade homes on the same dates to ensure each person will have access to the other's home. Home exchanges usually last from one to four weeks.

How does it work?

The first thing to do is to become a member of a legitimate home exchange website. You can Google them online and find one that interests you. Some home exchange websites require a fee for membership while others are free. There may be a particular area the website caters to such as a country or state. Search around and find the one that suits your interest. Depending on the website you choose, follow the directions to apply for membership. Once you are a member, you can proceed to post your home on the website. You will be able to search other people listings, also. Find a home and area that interests you and contact that person to determine if there is an interest by both sides. If there is an agreement, the two of you must work out the details of the exchange because home exchange websites do not arrange the exchanges.

Trusting your home to a stranger

It is important to become a member of a legitimate home exchange website. Most of these members on these websites are financially secure and will be respectful of your property. Remember that it goes the other way too-your exchange partner is trusting you.

Before the actual exchange happens, you should have a continuous line of communication with your exchange. You will be able to ask any questions you are concerned with and vice versa.

Note that home exchanges websites are not responsible for the condition of a member's home or their manners. It is entirely up to you if you want to develop a relationship with a member and exchange homes.

Will anyone be interested in my home?

Very good article Stephanie, congratulations. Just last week I added a post to my blog, which, among other things, also emphasized the importance of extensive communication with likely exchange partners before committing to a definite arrangement. My company - ExchangeHomes.com - has been in the home exchange business since 1986 and no-one has ever reported an instance of malicious damage or theft. Nor has a member arrived at their home exchange address to find just a vacant lot! As you point out, it's also critical that potential home swappers join a legitimate home exchange company. One point they seriously need to consider is do they want to join a "closed", members only website where the company has a record of all of their members, or are they willing to risk an "open" site which allows literally anyone to contact their paid members. A similar situation occurs between the mostly new companies which are building their databases by offering free memberships, versus older, establi

Thanks, Stephanie, for your excellent introduction to home exchange, and especially for your emphasis on the importance of doing thorough research, first, when looking for a home exchange agency(ies) to join that is likely to most suit your particular exchange needs, and second, in taking communicating extensively with potential home swap partners before agreeing to go ahead with an exchange. Thousands of people exchange homes every year and the vast majority are very successful indeed. I have operatated a home exchange service in London for over 22 years (and, yes, we have a very large number of attractive exchange offers in the UK!) and also publish a blog, Travel the Home Exchange Way, to provide information on all aspects of exchanging homes both for our members but especially for those new to the idea of swapping homes.
