Pace, the Pentagons top general has come under rapid fire for his comments regarding gay and lesbian troops in US military. In a recent statement, Pace compared homosexuality to adultery and said that the US government should not support open immorality. I guess the key word here is "open". According to advocates of the "Don't ask - Don't tell" policy, you can be gay or lesbian in the military, you just can't say "I'm gay". You can't act gay (whatever that means). You can't leave any record of having rented or purchased gay porn. You can't socialize with gays or be found in known gay territories. Any of these can and most likely will get you discharged.
My first issue with this is the issue of immorality. Morals are issues between an individual and their God/god (if they have one). Hindus consider cows sacred, and eating them to them is equivalent to sin. Muslims would consider a woman publicly baring cleavage to be immoral. So should we outlaw hamburgers for everyone? Should we ban all halter tops? I think not!
Too many Christians feel like they have a monopoly on defining morality and furthermore feel they have a right to legislate this definition. But America is NOT a Christian nation, it is a nation of many people and the role of our government is to ensure that all people, of all religions can live free to worship (or not to worship) how they see fit. I do not feel my being lesbian to be immoral. My conscience is free and clear before my God on this issue. The issue is not whether being gay or lesbian is moral or immoral. Everyone will answer that question differently, and that's ok. I have no problem with Pace feeling that homosexuality is immoral. I do have a problem with one moral view being used as criteria to serve in a country that guarantees its citizens protection from religious tyranny.
