With busy schedules everyone keeps getting a good night's sleep is very hard to do. The next day after the quality and quantity of sleep a person gets can determine how productive they will be. The loss of sleep has become common in today's society.

Tips for a Better Night's Sleep

Sleep loss may interfere with the body's ability to metabolize carbohydrates and cause high blood levels of glucose, a basic sugar found in the body. When a person's body produces excess glucose, it will promote over production of insulin as well. Excess glucose and insulin levels can promote the storage of body fat. This can also lead to insulin resistance, a critical feature of adult-onset diabetes.

Avoid Alcohol and Sleeping Aides

A person should avoid alcohol in the late afternoon and evening. When a person drinks alcohol closer to bed time, it can lead to insomnia. People with sleeping problems should never mix alcohol and sleeping pills. Alcohol increases the narcotic effects of the sleeping pills.

Small amounts of alcohol combined with sleeping pills can make one feel dizzy, confused or faint. Even in small doses, alcohol can cause early sleepiness, awaking during the night, and suppression of rapid eye movement sleep. The use of alcohol is detrimental to the functioning of the hormones of the body and can act as a source for cancer too.

Regular Bed Times

People should maintain regular bed and awakening times on weekends, other times off or on business trips. A person should also have regular, relaxing bedtime routines. These routines, such taking a long hot bath, reading a book or listening to soothing music can help you fall asleep.

A person will want to create a dark, cool, quiet, and a comfortable bedroom that will allow them to fall asleep. The bed should have a comfortable mattress and pillows. This will also allow one to fall asleep.

It is best to remove computers, televisions, reading materials, and work related items out of the bedroom. By doing this, you will be more apt to go to bed, stay there, and go to sleep. A bedroom should be used for sleep and having sex. After all, sex isn't work and sex can help you de-stress.

I found this article at midnight while enjoying a cigarette and Irish coffee. No wonder I can't sleep.
