Northwest Florida might not be able to compete with shopping meccas like New York or Chicago, but that doesn't mean the area is lacking in unique bargain-hunting destinations.

For a real shopper's grab-bag, check out the open-air Flea Market Gulf Breeze at 5760 Gulf Breeze Parkway, right across the street from The Zoo of Northwest Florida. Open only on weekends, the market hosts more than 500 vendors selling everything from fresh produce and locally made preserves to collectible cars, funky clothes, Avon products, live plants, used toys, souvenirs both nice and cheesy, old electronics, and a potpourri of doodads, tschotchkes, gadgets, gizmos and junk. There are also snack areas at both ends, a small 50-cent kiddie carousel and even occasional performances by a local musician. Plus, the people-watching is fascinating, as the market attracts as wide an assortment of shoppers as it does goods.

The Flea Market is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, with occasional special hours on holidays. For more information, visit the Flea Market Website or call 850-934-1971.

For a more upscale yet affordable shopping stop, try the aptly named Upscale Resale boutique at 8762 Ortega Park Drive in Navarre. This consignment store specializes in like-new, lightly worn and new designer clothing and accessories for women, and you can find everything from casual wear to formal gowns, famous-name shoes and purses, and unique jewelry. There's also a section devoted solely to fine children's wear, baby gear and gently used toys.

For more information about Upscale Resale, call 850-936-8946.
