This book was authored by Wael b. Hallaq: a leading academic and scholar in the field of Islamic law, who has become a prominent figure in recent years in the advancement of Islamic studies. Hallaq is
a senior professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and has authored numerous books on a wide range of topics relating to Islamic studies in recent years. In this book Hallaq traces the history of Islamic legal theory from its birth in the 7th century, up until the present day. The central aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical and philosophical growth and evolution of usul al-fiqh, the roots of Islamic jurisprudence,from classical and contemporary Islamic sources. The intended audience for this book is, as Hallaq indicates in his preface, is comprised of four groups: a wide readership both within and without Islamic studies, comparative lawyers and students of religious and comparative religious studies, although it is primarily addressed to those in the field of Islamic studies.
