Hop into the Smithsonian Performing Arts Camp for a Happening Summer
Don't make the mistake of assuming that a summer camp run by a museum is just an excuse for some fogies to earn an easy tax break. For its second consecutive year The Gig will sponsor the anything but old and stuffy Smithsonian Summer Performing Arts Camp in partnership with the National Music Cente
r and Museum, and the CityDance Ensemble. And guess what? It's an aspiring Hip-Hop musician's ambrosial escape from school and chores. In other words, just what a bored, music-crazy kids craves during the summertime.
"Personally, I find the focus of the performing art camps to be very interesting, " says Alexandra Leon, program director for the Smithsonian Summer Performing Arts Camp. "Each camp touches on, in some way, an aspect of hip-hop performance culture."
The Smithsonian Summer Performing Arts Camp offers three different programs designed for elementary and middle school students, as described in the camp's brochure:
Dance on 7th St! With CityDance Ensemble
Monday through Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
These intensive dance camps introduce campers to dance technique, music for dancers, choreography, and body awareness. Campers gain self-discipline, strength, and flexibility as they explore the art of dance. On the last day of camp, they share their experience in a performance for friends and family. K-2 Campers spend part of each day participating in storytelling and art activities; campers in the older sections use this extra time for additional work in costuming and choreography. Highly trained dance professionals co-teach each camp session.
