Online Schools: Can Online Colleges Really Deliver to International Students?

So you're thinking about an online college, you're looking through the schools, figuring out which schools have the courses you want, weighing costs. There is one other thing you need to be thinking about. Are you planning on going overseas? Are you in the military and might be based in another country? Are you an international student (whether that be an international student studying in the U.S or a U.S student studying abroad). Want to live abroad for a year while studying online? Undoubtedly the great thing about online schools is that they provide this sort of flexibility. However, there may be some unforeseen difficulties that you aren't taking into account. Before choosing a school you need to take into account several extra things other than the aforementioned.

Availability of books. You're going to need books for school, perhaps even DVDs for CDs. One problem often encountered by international students, although most online schools welcome them, is the availability of books. In most countries you can order and have your college books online. The problem is that customs in every country is different and sometimes books and other products can take up to eight weeks to be delivered. If you can get express service, great! No problems. However, you'll always have to take customs into account. Furthermore, you'll need to take the price of your books into account. Express service is going to cost you a fair amount and if you're already paying $100 a book, you'll be paying a fortune for course materials.

Another option is to have books ordered through a store location, however, most large book retailers will not order textbooks. Call around and find out if you can get books you'll need. Check the school's website for samples of the books that will be needed, then check how easy or difficult it will be to get them.
