Chicago Bears 2009 Season Preview
The Chicago Bears made big headlines this off-season by acquiring quarterback Jay Cutler from Denver for quarterback Kyle Orton. This should definitely open up the running game for running back Matt Forte who should have a great season. The Bears should have a pretty decent offense now, with Cutler having Forte, WR Devin Hester, WR Earl Bennett, and TE Greg Olsen as his main weapons. In the draft, Chicago selected WR Juaquin Iglesias from Oklahoma and WR Johnny Knox from Abilene Christian who has impressed many so far. The wide receiving core is still somewhat inexperienced but they do provide a lot of potential. They also improved their line with the additions of Frank Omiyale, Orlando Pace, and Kevin Schaffer to provide protection for Cutler. Chris Williams could who was their first round draft choice last year could also fight for a spot on the line.
On defense, the Bears linebacking core is probably its strongest component. Pisa Tinoisamoa was signed to play alongside veterans Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs. Former Lions head coach Rod Marinelli was hired to be the Bears defensive line coach and despite leading the Lions to an 0-16 record last year, he should be an upgrade for the defensive line. Chicago hopes DL Tommie Harris can stay healthy this season and duplicate a season like he had back in 2006. The Bears biggest weakness is definitely its secondary. Nathan Vasher will return after missing half the season last year due to an injury. Charles Tillman will be the other cornerback and rookie D.J. Moore from Vanderbilt could see a lot of playing time and provide some depth. They do not have any big playmakers but did acquire S Josh Bullocks this off-season which may provide some help. Lovie Smith will be taking over Defensive Coordinator duties this season and that should also be an upgrade.
