For many homeowners, creating a beautiful landscape is critical to not only maintaining the value of your home, but also in creating a peaceful retreat outdoors during the spring and summer months. While it's possible to spend thousands of dollars on professional landscape work, with a little creative thinking you'll be able to spend far less and still have a beautiful landscape job.

These tips will help you to dramatically cut costs when it comes to preparing the landscape for your home.

Make a plan
You don't have to be a professional landscaper in order to develop a landscape plan. Spend some time on the internet researching the types of plants that grow best in your climate, and work from there. Often you'll be able to get free advice from family members, or from your local garden center. If worse comes to worse, then there are a number of how-to books and computer software programs that will help you to lay out the perfect landscape plan for your home.

Don't think cheap - think FREE!
Trees and plants don't have to cost you a fortune; in fact, they don't have to cost you anything at all! Often, local gardening societies or civic organizations will hold plant and tree giveaways within the community during spring planting time. It's also a good idea to keep your eye open for houses or buildings that are being torn down, this can be an excellent opportunity to not only get plants but also collect brick and stone for use as decorative borders in your landscape.

Organize friends and co-workers to do a plant "trade". Most people are more than willing to give you a start off of a perennial they have in their own yard, in return for a start from one of your own. Create a plant "swap meet" in your neighborhood and see how many different varieties you can come up with!

There are also websites like GardenHere.com that give people the opportunity to swap plants with one another online. Not only is this a great way to get free plants, but it's also a fantastic opportunity to meet gardening friends from all over!
