No matter how slim you are, if you discover cellulite on your thighs, the temptation is to embark on a starvation diet immediately. But it is now known that excessive dieting is no deterrent whatsoever to cellulite, and may even give it a boost.

Timing and moderation

One recent poll suggested that 96 per cent of women want to lose weight. Confronted daily with waif-like mannequins in the media, we are ready to try anything to regain our slender figures. But these days, crash diets are unanimously denounced by experts as inefficient, not to mention dangerous. And in exactly the same way as when quitting smoking, to lose weight you need to choose your moment carefully. Body and mind are inextricably linked. ' Never forget the extent to which emotions play a role in the equation,' says M. Freud, a psychotherapist. If you are eating in response to a specific stressful situation, you should question whether this is the right time to ration yourself.

Proteins and discipline

We generally eat less now than we did twenty years ago but we still do not take enough exercise and our diets are richer in fats and refined sugar. If we want to loosen the grip of cellulite, returning to a balanced diet and taking physical exercise makes more sense than resorting to brutal self-starvation. The only sensible way to lose weight is by increasing energy expenditure through a sporting activity while eating a protein-rich diet (meat, fish, eggs) and keeping your fat intake low.

Did you know?

The majority of women don't eat enough protein. It is vital to nourish your muscles (lean mass) by eating enough protein (eggs, red meat, fish). Red meat contains iron, which women often lack. Egg yolks are packed with iron and vitamins; egg whites are pure protein. Losing a few kilos means you can better target the areas where cellulite has set in. before deciding to go ahead with liposuction, some plastic surgeons advise their patients to go on a weight reducing diet.

Key facts

Changing your diet does not mean starving yourself. To lose weight, you just need to eat a little less of everything.
