The Tempurpedic bed is touted as "the first step toward a better night's sleep" by the Tempurpedic company. Their mattresses are made of a unique visco memory foam which promotes better sleep, fewer awakenings, and less tossing and turning. Everyone has seen the silly guy on the television commercial, jumping up and down on the bed with a full wine glass on the other end, and the glass doesn't turn over... well, that's the way these beds work. They do not transfer motion. They're amazingly soft and firm at the same time, conforming to your body like the bed was made for you.

I have slept on a Tempurpedic mattress for two years. My doctor insisted that I purchase one when I was having extreme chronic pain. In fact, he helped me get my insurance company to pay for it. Their initial response was to buy us a much less expensive visco-foam mattress and bed frame. Within a short while not only was I in much worse pain because the mattress was inferior quality (could've told them that the first night!), the bed frame broke and the mattress sunk in on one side! It took us several months to get the manufacturer to honor their warranty. Finally our complaints to the BBB, the Attorney General's office, and the threat of a lawsuit paid off and they refunded our money. It was a nightmare!

With check in hand, my husband and I headed to the mattress store to purchase a Tempurpedic bed - precisely what we should have gotten in the first place. As soon as I lay down on the store model I started to cry because it felt so GOOD. I wanted them to deliver that afternoon!

Tempurpedic mattresses must have a firm flat base to rest on. You can also put one of these mattresses on an adjustable bed. However, they absolutely cannot rest on a standard box spring. If you are purchasing a mattress only (not a set), and are not 100% sure about the base you are putting it on, please call Tempurpedic for guidance. If you place your mattress on the wrong surface, you will void your warranty.

We purchased the king-sized Tempurpedic mattress from Haverty's several years ago along with the twin adjustable base. We found it very satisfactory, but now my husband is complaining of joint pain in the morning. I wonder if the mattress could be turned over? Please respond.

I lived with my boyfriend and he had a Termpurpedic Matress that was great. This year I moved by myself and bought the same matress. IT IS KILLING MY BACK! I have it for 3 weeks already and every day I wake with Heavy lower pain. I even had to take a pill because it hurt me walk. I think i am going to return the bed. I am so confused I have no idea why my bed is so uncomfortable.

We've had a CalKing TempurPedic Rhaposdy (~$4000) for about 9 months. At first, we loved it. However, after about 6 months, the support has deteriorated and there is a super-soft spot right at the waistline. Of course it's not covered by warranty, because the warranty covers sagging when you are NOT on the mattress. The problem, however, is sagging when we ARE on the mattress. It's still firm near the head and feet, but a soup bowl in the middle. We're going to get rid of it. We're both now having serious lower back pain, something my wife has never had before.

I tried a Tempur-Pedic for two months, two months of increasing excruciating pain and discomfort. After negotiations with the mattress company, and a promise to call the State Attorney General, I was given a trade to an Englander mattress. Pain's gone, complete rest at night. Warnings to anyone thinking of getting a Tempur-Pedic. Models in the stores are softer due to being models, your purchase will be rock hard. I was told it could take months to break in. Temperature: Tempur-Pedics are very warm due to retained body heat. Even air conditioning wasn't a relief. Unless you weigh over 200 lbs, you might not be comfortable on one. I weigh 135, and never felt any comfort because I did not sink into the foam.

This was a great article, and I'm glad you had a good experience. I do want to mention, however, for the sake of others, that I have a friend who had one of these and the chemicals in the mattress made her terribly ill. Apparently a fair number of people have adverse reactions to the chemicals. Just an FYI for anyone who buys one and then finds themselves with "mystery" illnesses.

Hmm, interesting. One day I'll have to try one and see if it helps my back any.
