The vast majority of scientists believe it. The United Nations believe it. Americans are beginning to understand it and believe it. Yet, Dr. Jerry Falwell still thinks global warming is a bunch of hooey.

Falwell is highly respected by many right-wing, conservative Christians in America. He is the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist church in Lynchburg, Virginia, and Chancellor of Liberty University. He has also resurrected his "Moral Majority Coalition" in recent days, which exists to bring "this nation back to the moral values of faith and family on which it was founded." More than 200,000 people subscribe to his "National Liberty Journal," touted as "The Conservative Christian Newspaper.

Yet, Falwell sees global warming as needless hysteria, perpetuated by "the United Nations (no friends of America), liberal politicians, radical environmentalists, liberal clergymen, Hollywood and pseudo-scientists." He says that evangelicals that buy into the myth are naïve.

In a February 2007 sermon to his congregation at Thomas Road Baptist Church, as well as a similar article in "The National Liberty Journal," Falwell talks about a new organization - the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance (ISA) - that is a combination of pastors, leaders, professors and researchers. Their goal is to find a sensible response to the obvious climate change.

Out of 63 persons listed on their Advisory Board, only three are employed in a field that directly relates to science.

Falwell does quote significantly from Dr. Walter Williams, an economics professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Dr. Williams says that this "big lie" is a conglomeration between the Weather Channel and environmental extremists. Their goal is to "get us in a tizzy over global warming, and they're downright mean about it," says Williams.

ok here we go....70% of the warming in the 1900's occured before 1940 and 80% of the CO2 increased after. How could that happen? I thought CO2 causes temperature increases? And how come the planet has not warmed further since 1998? Shouldn't we just keep heating up? How come it was warmer 8,000 years ago but we claim it's warmer now? How come there is no EMPIRICAL evidence for agw? This is waht happen when too many people think business and cars are bad, as well as cheap abundant energy. There is nothing wrong with it, we have to stop feeling guilty or we won't be mad when they raise our taxes for this crap.

Wow. If anyone's guilty of changing the subject, it's Jerry Falwell. He's a bit more lost than I originally thought he was. Great article! Thanks for sharing.
