Christians Aren't the Only Ones Who Have an End of Days Prophecy

Christians are sometimes demonized by non-Christians for their End of Days and apocalypse Bible prophecies, but many may be surprised to learn that Christians haven't exactly cornered the market on Armageddon. Did you know that Shiite Muslims also have an End of Days type apocalypse theology, and th
at it's so radical it was banned by the Ayatollah himself? And that this Islamic apocalypse philosophy may explain some of the things that are going on in the Middle East, specifically Iran, today?

Recently on CNN Glenn Beck interviewed guests Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, the authors of the wildly successful "Left Behind" series and acclaimed author Joel Rosenberg, author of Epicenter, about current events and how they relate to the end times/apocalypse. He began the interview about the apocalypse with the questions--

Are the cataclysmic events of 9/11, Katrina, tsunami, famine and the threat of global pandemic signs we're living in the end times?

One world government, one world economy, one world vision. Are we creeping even closer to the Book of Revelations` countdown to doomsday? And does an age-old prophecy foretell a Russian-Iranian alliance against Israel as well as a nuclear showdown? Apocalypse now?

Some non-Christians like to chalk this type of talk about the apocalypse up to Christian Evangelical fanaticism or just those right wing religious wackos.

Blogger Steven Zed writes--

Date-setters syndrome, the contagious desire to place a specific date on the Apocalypse, used to be limited to the radical religious and the Christian Bible thumpers. But in recent months, as the war in the Middle East continues and tensions between Islamic nations and the West escalate, date-setters syndrome has spread to the talking heads and politicians.

The Bible thumpers can be given an overdose of their own medicine with Matthew 24:36 ("But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only."), but the real threat comes from the secular date-setters, who will never be satisfied until WW3 erupts and they can proudly say "I told you so."

  • Glenn Beck recently interviewed the authors of the popular "Left Behind" series on CNN.
  • Some Christians say 9/11, Katrina, tsunami, famine and global pandemic are signs of the End of Days.
  • The Hojjatieh sect of Shii Islam believes bloodshed and chaos must precede their Imam's return.

Thing is, Christianity believes that the end of times is preordained. The scary thing about the Shi'a is, as you pointed out, they think they can bring it about through human means - specifically war. It's time people began paying attention to that. Even if it's a load of hogwash, their actions in attempting this will have horrifying consequences. I, for one, will die before I submit.

Hi Dana, thanks for your comments. Yes, I'm probably a little heavy on the quoted stuff.

Kim this is fine writing - much quoted material though, and, wide arena of theology- the end days have been speculated about by many. The end times, however, is a phrase much used in the Bible, but it is not so clearly understood- modern authors such as LeHaye tend to take public dogmatic stances; after all, it's hard to sell folks on left behind, if they don't believe that something is about to happen from which they will be...left behind? Good writing though. Dana
