The Magdalene Dispensation

The Magdalene Dispensation really made me think. Growing up in rural Alabama, I was taught that the bible is "THE" source for what happened during the life of Jesus and about religion. As I grew older, this idea was one that was never questioned. It just was that way. As I grew even older, I learned about life. I saw people ruin other's reputation out of spite. I learned how people were tortured and even killed because their beliefs were different. I learned that sometimes you have to choose to keep secrets in order to protect those that we love. And probably most of all, I learned that everything doesn’t always fit the image or beliefs that I hold so very dear. The Magdalene Dispensation reminded me of the fact that the stories in the bible are about real people, not just beliefs. They lived, loved, hoped, and feared. They made sacrifices for a better tomorrow. Lona Lyons has done a superb job of bringing the past to life in a celebration of the power of knowledge and faith. She has brought aspects of several different religions to life in a story of a never ending love and dedication to a greater cause. You can feel the power of what she has written. Their trials allow us to learn through their experiences. As we all grow closer to the spiritual knowledge which we require, it is comforting to read a book such as The Magdalene Dispensation.
