April 4, 2007 - The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has announced he will free the 15 British sailors and marines who were captured and detained on March 23. British troops were allegedly "well into Iraqi waters" when they were captured. The detainees consisted of 14 men and one woman."I declare that the people of Iran and the government of Iran -- in full power to place on trial the military people -- to give amnesty and pardon to these 15 people and I announce their freedom and their return to the people of Britain," Ahmadinejad said in a news conference.
Since their capture, Iran has released several videos of the men and woman who were captured. They appeared to be in good health and good spirits. One image of them showed them smiling and playing a game.
The one female detainee, Fay Turney released a statement after her capture, stating that they (the detainees) were being treated fairly and those who had taken them into custody were nice and pleasant to them.
Ahmadinejad commended those who captured the British troops, calling them brave. Three of the border guards were presented with medals of bravery for the capture.
Britain has demanded the release of their troops as well as disclosure of there location, which is currently unknown.
