Many researchers feel that developing nuclear power, harnessing the power of the atom in fission reactions, is the most important alternative energy resource that is available to us, due to the fact of the incredible power that it can produce. Nuclear power does not have to be destructive, and it is much safer than most people think.

Nuclear power plants burn very cleanly, and they possess almost unbelievable efficiency. Nuclear power is produced at 80% efficiency. What this means is that the energy created in the fission reactions is nearlyequal to the energy that gets put into the fission reactions. What's more, there's not much waste material produced by nuclear fission's creation of nuclear power. However, because of the fact that there is no such thing as creating energy waste-free, there is a little waste created with nuclear power generation. The worries of the environmentalists concerning the use of nuclear power as an alternative energy resource is this small but deadly waste; it consists of radioactive gases that need to be contained. The radiation from these gases lingers for a very long time, so the gas can never be released from where it gets stored. However, the volume of nuclear powers' waste gas is quite small in comparison to how much NOx (nitrous oxide-in other words, air pollution) gets produced by just one day's ush-hour traffic in a major city such as Los Angeles. While the nuclear power generated radtion is definitely the more deadly, the radiation is also much easier to contain and store. So no matter what the environemnetalists may say, nuclear power is in reality an environmentally friendly alternative energy. There is only a low risk of the energy getting out of its containment. Again, there is such a small amount of waste produced by nuclear power that it should not be any problem to contain it and store it, especially as technology advances.

Takeaways
  • Nuclear power does not have to be destructive
  • Nuclear power is much safer than most people think.
