USA Today Coaches Poll Topped by Florida

The USA Today coaches poll is the first hint at who the favorites are in college football. Today, the USA Today coaches poll put the usual suspects at the top. Obviously, the USA Today coaches poll had to put Florida at the top, since they are the national champion and Tim Tebow is back. The USA Today coaches poll beyond that has the SEC, Big 12 and Pac 10 dominating much of the poll. Florida tops the first USA Today coaches poll, but to top the final one, they must hold off Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, USC and the other traditional powers.

The USA Today coaches poll put Florida at number 1, though it wasn't a unanimous choice. Though Florida is the number 1 preseason pick everywhere, the USA Today coaches poll had some coaches who didn't think Florida was number 1. Other first place votes went to Texas, Oklahoma and USC.

Texas brings back Colt McCoy and a team that was one play away from playing for the national championship last year. Oklahoma brings back Sam Bradford after their national championship loss last year. And USC is, as always, USC.

The USA Today coaches poll had to rank those four teams at the top, given that all their stars are coming back. Beyond that, Alabama, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, LSU and Ole Miss rounded out the top 10.

In terms of conference domination, the USA Today coaches poll has four SEC teams in the top 10, and five in the top 25. The Big 12 has two top 10 teams, with Oklahoma State just shy of the top 10 at number 11. The Pac 10 has four top 25 teams, with California, Oregon and Oregon State trying to knock USC off.

While the traditional favorites crowd the top of the USA Today coaches poll, the rankings show a few upstarts hoping to crash the party. Ole Miss has uncommonly high expectations, while teams like Oklahoma State, Cal, Georgia Tech and North Carolina hope to take the next step. The mid-majors are represented by Boise State, TCU and Utah in the top 20.

Nebraska makes a return to the USA Today coaches poll, as the Cornhuskers hope to be close to returning to power. Notre Dame is in at number 23, with a relatively easy schedule to deal with this year.
