Online Cyberstalking is on the Increase. Education is the Best Defense Against These Cowards Who Hide in the Shadows
Being a victim of crime is never easy. If you haven't tried it, don't. It changes you forever. It impacts the way you look at the world, and react to it. And cybercrime-particularly cyberstalking, is perhaps the worst of all. Because you can't see or confront your tormenter, it creates a sense of deep unease, and often outright terror.But what kind of creature is a cyberstalker? What makes them tick? First and foremost they are bullies. Inadequate sexually and socially, they migrate towards the 'net, where they can enact their deepest fantasies of power and control.
They range from the usual Wannabees to the sociopath-the most dangerous of all.
Which apparently is what I'm dealing with. What is the primary motive for this type of stalker? According to BullyingOnline "Jealousy and envy motivate the bully to identify a competent and popular individual who is then controlled and subjugated through projection of the bully's own inadequacy and incompetence. When the target asserts their right not to be bullied, a paranoid fear of exposure compels the bully to perceive that person as a threat and hence neutralize and dispose of them as quickly as possible. Once a person has been eliminated there's an interval of between 2 days and 2 weeks before the bully chooses another target and the cycle starts again".
Totally lacking empathy or the ability to socialize within normal parameters, these individuals seek out people who appear to threaten their place in the order of things. Competent, capable people, people who refuse to be controlled or to compromise their integrity or system of ethics, become the subject of attack, until safely disposed of.
The serial stalker will often cover up or defend pedophilia, and may in fact be an active participant in such activities. They often have a back up string of carefully groomed females, who are so enamored of them, they would do anything to keep this controlling monsters approval. What is truly sad about this, is the offender doesn't even see these females as human. They are simply tools to carry out his infantile fantasies, and to act out revenge for imagined slights, on his behalf.

Robert, thank you for your comments here. People like your former friend are becoming more and more common. Think about it... how many times do you hear a child or adult refuse to take responsibility for their own actions? They claim it's the bosses fault, their kids fault, they are PMSing etc etc. This is a societal issue which unfortunately has found a refuge on the internet.

I know I don't fit your demographic of victims, but a former friend of mine -one I've known most of my life- fits your stalker profile about 80%. He has been stalking and harassing me because I refuse to let him control me emotionally. He has a strong record of failed realtionships, including an ex wife, both of his kids, and several ex girlfriends. And through it all, it was always the other person's fault, as far as he's concerned. His MO is to blame others for problems when the problems are his (projection). By doing so, he knows he doesn't have to address his issues. Projecting his inadequacies for him is like writing blank checks: it reduces his stress and rewards him with further control of others. He isn't in any kind of physical or mental shape, so he bullies people emotionally and, of course, from behind his computer screen and over the phone. A very poor speciman of person.

This is a good article with great content. I want to point out that we can be cyber-stalked by members of the same sex who feel threatened by us in some manner. The article hit the nail on the head with my female cyber-bully.
"The police or federal government can't possibly do it all for you" is the best part of your article. To call a cyber-stalker a coward is an insult to cowards! This has happened to me before, and all I do is delete everything they post and ignore them, because they are nothing. Fortunately, I never ran in to a goober like you had, and you describe their personal habits to a 'T'; I knew a guy like this about 20 years ago; well before the internet, but he used to do his harassing on the CB radio, mostly to truckers he'd never have the guts to taunt face to face! Excellent job; very thorough!

This is so true, but the terms of online bulling are no covered by once the threat is gone. These stalkers need to control the environment that is around them and they want others to join in on the party to make the posting person on the blog or forum a living hell. They will not only flood the message board with stuff that make no sense but they will be interactive with it and make others join in on it. They have no forfillment in their lives and to be a cyber bully makes them the big man on campus. They are in the spotlight and it makes them feel good so they leash on to that person and call them out until that person is gone.
These are serious cases and the government is starting to catch up with these people because they may never know who they are attacking.
