What Not to Wear Makeover Recaps and Reviews
Tonight on What Not to Wear, Stacy and Clinton ambush Denver native Alexandra, aka Lexa. A 30 year old woman with a difficult past, Lexa left home at 18 and lived in a homeless shelter for 3 years. She then worked at the shelter, put herself through college, and landed a customer service job with the Red Cross.The problem is, Lexa has become enamored with Japanese "Lolita" clothing, which has an exaggerated little-girl style. Lexa wears these short, crinolined party dresses with polka-dots and shoulder bows and lace to work. Her boss and friends have tried to let her know that this is not appropriate for the office, but Lexa won't budge on what she feels is her own personal style.
What Not to Wear: The Secret Footage
Lexa is fairly hostile during the What Not to Wear secret footage, adamant that her attire is work appropriate--and conservative. When Stacy and Clinton try to explain the sexual connotations to her wardrobe, she is offended, saying that's not what "Lolita" is about--it's not sexual. While I agree that her clothes weren't revealing, it's apparent that she's never read Nabokov, or delved enough into the manga/anime community.
Stacy and Clinton try their best, but Lexa actually tells them to "clean out their ears" when she perceives they aren't listening to her. They are hearing her; they're just not agreeing with her. They tell her they're willing to help, but she has to be open to working with them on this What Not to Wear experience. She agrees, but Stacy and Clinton are rightfully skeptical.
On her own, Lexa tells the What Not to Wear camera that she's upset because Stacy and Clinton were acting better than her, when in fact she's better than them in lots of ways. Lexa doesn't see that Stacy and Clinton are only feeling superior about fashion--something in which they are experts. They never said or implied that they were better than her as a person.

I don't have a clue as to what lolita clothing is. I just don't understand why she went on the show. Hadn't she seen the show before. I was a little stunne when she came out in the jean skirt outfit an said the high-heel shoes made her look like a call girl because the skirt was too short to wear with those shoes, and then she shoes up at her reveal party half-naked wearing the same shoes. I just think her behaviour was obnoxious - maybe she just wanted a new wardrobe. This girl was not happy with anything!!!
Repost: I would also like to stress to readers/viewers that What Not to Wear has always been a show about appearances and perception. A woman on WNTW may wear a tube top and hot pants to work because she lives in a warm climate, and likes to be comfortable. It doesn't matter what her intent is--her coworkers and bosses perceive her to be inappropriately dressed, blatantly sexual, and not deserving of respect. In this case it is irrelevant what Lexa's intent in wearing Lolita fashion is, or what that fashion is really about, or what the subculture involves. Even though Lexa may have thought she was being modest, other people felt that childlike clothing on a woman's body was provocative. It was also inappropriate for her work environment. Whether you believe this is fair or not is a different topic entirely. Stacy and Clinton work with perceptions, and helping their makeover recipients be perceived in a more positive light so they can move ahead in the world.

The lolita fashion was in no way started in relation to the novel. The point of lolita fashion is to represent innocence and purity, not bring about sexual connotations. Many elitist lolitas dislike dresses that are too high above the knees. And just because it happens to be a popular Japanese trend, does not mean it is related to anime/manga.
It's quite apparent that the one who wrote this review is a person that sees anime/manga as cartoon pornography and is ignorant to the other genres that exist within it. Just like with American cartoons, there are some for children and some for adults. God forbid that a parent does not allow a child to watch Dora the Explorer because it's a cartoon and therefore, must be as crude as South Park.

Dude! This fashion was made for everyone! I know a girl who's mom occasionally dresses up in Lolita with her. That doesn't make her a pedo-bear! And she's not "crazy and thinks she's a child". And how dare you, EHR!? Just because she dresses a certain way does not mean she has any mental problems! Its official, there is a confusion with ageplay/sissy. Just because its a dress that could have been worn by a child in the Victorian-era does not make it a fetish! Is research that hard to do, American rednecks!!??

It doesn't matter what Lolita fashion or subculture is "really" about. If this woman lived in Japan perhaps the style could be appropriate, but here in America where it is not widespread it is going to be perceived in a different light. And like it or not, how you are percieved by others DOES matter, especially in the business world. What she was wearing was not appropriate for her lifestyle, period. For what it's worth I think Lolita fashion looks fantastic on teenagers, Japanese musicians, and other people for which it is appropriate--but not on this woman.

Lexa was an uber-bitch on the show and I think her issues go far beyond what WNTW is equipped to handle. It's not about liking Lolita fashion. For one, she's doing it wrong and, secondly, it's not appropriate for her age group or her chosen...CHOSEN...lifestyle.
I just hope she can get some real help because it's obvious that she is book smart, determined and driven.

I like yous (the commenters) you all know what yous are saying. I myself am a Lolita boy, and know, Lolita is not for girls/women, children or teenagers alone, it's not for any specific type of person either. It's for anyone who wants to dive into it, and there are certainly enough styles to go around.
If someone threw out my Lolita dress (although I only have one) I'd be pretty annoyed too...
