9,000,000 children have no health insurance, a problem that has been ignored for a long time by the United States government. This is the message brought by Susie Flynn, the nine year old girl aiming for the White House who wants to ensure that the children who have no health insurance are not ignored. And even though, according to the US Constitution, she cant become president much like Arnold Schwarzenegger, she has campaigned in front of the White House, on the side of the road, and even on television.

Sponsored by the Children's Defense Fund, Susie's message impacts nine million uninsured American children, most of whom live with two parents. With that kind of sponsorship, Susie has been the first 2008 Presidential Candidate with a national buy on CNN, airing during popular shows such as Headline News, The Situation Room, and CNN American Morning, getting a huge leap on even Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. But why is Susie so different from the rest of the candidates? Because she has focused on something other than the war happening in Iraq. Other candidates, on average, keep repeating the same phrase with different words, "We need to get most of our troops out of Iraq." The Iraq war may or may not be a lost cause, but Americans are certainly tired of hearing about the depressing death tolls coming from Iraq. It is already clear, by virtue of which candidates have raised the most money so far, that we will be leaving Iraq very soon.

Now that we know which direction we'll be heading with the war, it's nice to hear a candidate talk about a new issue. According to Ms. Flynn's website, uninsured children are five times more likely to go 2 years without a doctor visit compared to insured children. She also points out that even though America spends nearly twice as much on health care per person than the average of industrialized countries, we still have high infant mortality rates. According to the 2005 est. CIA Factbook, the United States ranks at the 179th, while we are surpassed by over 40 countries, including Taiwan, Cuba, Liechtenstein, Canada, Germany, Japan, the UK, and most industrialized countries.

Great article! Its great to see another issue that hits home come before the War in Iraq. I'm 35 now and I remember many years that I did not see a doctor because my mom could not afford healthcare.

Good for her!! I'm 21, so not a child anymore, but I am without health insurance. There is a large amount of college-aged (I'm not in college anymore) adults without health insurance as well. I have some medical issues that need to be taken care of, and I have to rely on the "low-cost" services of Planned Parenthood or hope that my mother will deem my illness/issue worthy enough to pay out-of-pocket for me to visit a real doctor. She thinks that mental illness is a farce, so I am without the medication that I need. This is a sad state of affairs, and *someone* needs to step up and make a real stand about it.

I love people like this who can make a difference; someone who people will actually listen and pay attention to. And congradulations, Ryan for making the front page! ^_^

Well, she's pretty much earned a future ticket to Harvard.

The ugliest portion of the travesty of American health care is the neglect of children, and anyting that helps bring this to light is a good thing!

Very interesting story and vital subject matter and the little girl is apparently courageous. Hopefully some adults, who can win, will follow suit.

I heard about this and think it is a great campaign to get the nation focused on the issue of healthcare. Nice write up Ryan! Family values get back on the front burner with Susie Flynn.

It sounds like an advertising gimmick that is using the upcoming elections to get more attention to this issue and maybe this is omething the CDF plans to do with every election in the future. I agree with Scott that she is being exploited in a way. But then again like Ryan says, she seems like a bright kid. She probably understands she's really just a spokesperson for the CDF and not really a serious candidate. Interesting article.

To put things simply in reply to a couple comments, Susie is a party candidate of CDF's new political party as indicated on their website. They claim "CDF Announces Presidential Candidate" with a link to her website. She seems like a really bright girl and certainly understands that she herself can't technically win the election (however disappointing that may be for all of us).

It's cute and a nice message, but the Children's Defense Fund is kind of exploiting this girl.

What a wonderful idea! She'll go far... We all might be better off if we elected someone so willing to actually better our country.

This is a well written article. I find it very admirable and interesting that this girl is trying to draw attention to an important issue such as healthcare. Good for her! Maybe she will be able to make people listen.
