Men suffering from the Madonna-Whore Complex, see women either as sexual beings ( whores), or as strictly love interests (mothers) only. They do not see women as integrated entity. They can't except that a woman who becomes a mother, can also be a sexual being also. They see things in black and white. This often starts to come about when the woman is pregnant with his child, or directly after the birth of his child. Before the women got pregnant, they may have had an extremely satisfying sex life. It's during the pregnancy, or after birth when the real problem begins.

There are as many different theories on why a man develops this way of thinking or believing, as there are theorists. It can be anywhere from the good old Oedipus Complex by Freud himself, or because of a cold, distant, unavailable mother, when he was a child growing up. Whatever the reason, men who suffer from this complex, seem to have a problem thinking that a woman can be a sexual being, as well as a mother. This type of man often feels like it it's wrong to have sexual feelings about a mother of a child, because he is relating to his own mother. On one hand the woman he sees as a "Whore", or sexual being, is the only one that he can relate to sexually. On the other hand, the "Madonna", or pure woman, who he truly loves, is seen as just that, and nothing more. He has a splitting, where the woman is not an integrated, or multi-faceted being. She is just one or the other. She is for one thing or the other, not both. Some men can have this type of belief, even if the woman never becomes pregnant or gives birth. However, I would like to just concentrate on the man that develops this because of pregnancy, or birth of a child.

Madonna/Whore can happen even before the birth of a child. It often happens even before marriage when a relationship starts to become established. In this instance the man can only be sexually aroused when the relationship is new and he hasn't gotten intimate on a psychological level with the partner. Once that happens he finds himself suddenly unable to be sexually aroused by the partner. It may begin with a simple feeling of uneasiness during sex and may then turn into full blown sexual dysfunctions such as the inability to ejaculate during intercourse or the inability to get or hold an erection. The man knows something is wrong but does not know what it is. Many of these men may blame the fact that they get sexually bored with a partner easily and simply move from partner to partner to avoid the sexual difficulties. The childhood trauma that causes Madonna/whore is there only on a subconcious level. Some men manage to perform sexually without difficulty until some kind of mil

This is so bizarre! My best friend's husband must have this problem--he refuses to have sex with her while she's pregnant. She tells me that he says he's just not attracted to the pregnant body, but like you mentioned with the other scenario, you'd think that would matter less after a month or so! He also had/has a psycho mother whom he has not been on speaking terms with for many years. So this explains a lot. They are about to have their 4th child. I hope their fate is better than the many you described. Great article.
