French Country switch plates can easily be made from existing plastic or wood switch plates. To transform your plain switch plates to match your French Country décor just make sure you use the correct primer first!

Those cheap plain plastic, metal, or wood Switch Plates are perfect for French Country antiquing. Before you get started painting you should add some wood details with those egret little wooden embellishments you find at the arts and craft store. Try for a fleur de le, which is very French.

Use glue to glue small fleur de les onto your switch plate.

Let the glue dry for twenty four hours and you are ready to start painting.

Here is a list of supplies you will need to start French Country antiquing and resurfacing your old Switch Plates:

Primer (metal, plastic, or wood primer)
Royal Blue Paint & Sunny Yellow Paint
Roller paint brushes
A variety of 2", 3", or 4" paintbrushes
Wood stain
Glaze
Sandpaper
Drop clothes
Cheap, outdated, or plain Switch Plates

The first step is to lay out some newspaper. Line your newly embellished switch plates up on the paper and you are ready to start.

You need to spray on a coat of Kilz primer, which is perfect for wood, metal, or plastic light switch covers.

Let this fine coat of primer dry for at least 8 hours.

If you want a rough more rustic French Country look try putting the primer on with one of the 4" brushes.

A Sprayable primer or foam roller will create the smoothest surface.

Allow your primer to dry completely.

Now, you are ready to paint on a coat of yellow paint. Use a warm yellow paint.

Again, you can paint this on or spray this paint on for your French country paint technique. The choice is yours.

Let this warm sunny yellow paint dry.

Now, spray on or paint on a coat of blue paint. A lovely rich and inviting blue is perfect here. Make it match and it in the rest of your French Country home décor.

Let this blue paint dry for 24 hours.

Start the antiquing process by using the sand paper to rough up edges and other areas that would typically be used over time.

Be sure to sand the wood fleur de les to age them too.

Takeaways
  • Be sure to sand the wood fleur de les to age them too.
  • Now, lightly wipe away any dust.
  • To finish you can use some wood gel stain or a dark brown glaze to antique the French Country.
