Before you put pen to paper, before you even vaguely consider writing an e-book, you must first decide on the topic or subject you are planning to write about. For many people, this is the most important stage of pre-writing. If you select the wrong topic, no matter how long or short, how well written or well-rounded, your e-book simply won't sell.
That said, there are several strategies you can use to ensure that you select a topic for your e-book that is sizzling.
Finding a Market
The first step you should take in the writing process is finding a target market for your e-book. If there is an audience for your material, you can rest assured that your e-book will be successful. That said, how do you figure out what markets are hot and which are not?
There are several common markets that do well in the e-book industry. These are markets that sell because they provide consumers with information that is critical and relevant to problem solving. What are these markets? A few of the more commonly popular markets are:
- Health and Fitness
- Personal Finance
- Dating and Love
- Personal Success or Self-Help
- Hobbies
Think about the types of things that interest you. You are bound to come up with a few things that would be of interest to others. There is always a demand for the topics listed above. Consider checking out local advertisements. What are some common themes? What types of ads have you seen recently in your inbox? All of these sources are places for ideas. Markets are everywhere. Even by simply listening to the news at night you can come up with great market ideas. Anything that makes the five o'clock news is a potential grand slam market area for your next e-book.
