Word of Mouth: The best form of advertising for a massage therapist is word of mouth. Give great massages and ask for referrals in return. If you have your own business, you can start a referral program for your current clients. I personally run a special that gives my clients 50% off a full session for every five people they refer to my practice. Of course, the referral doesn't count until their friend or family member actually schedules and receives their massage. Giving incentives to current clients is a great way to keep your current business and build new business while allowing your current clients to earn something special in return. You don't necessarily have to give 50% off - be creative!
Attend Events: Get out there and pound the pavement. Attend vendor events, benefits, sidewalk sales, and craft fairs and market yourself. Don't forget to take your massage chair or table with you! Whether you are giving away free massage at a benefit or charging $1 per minute, you are giving the public the opportunity to experience what you have to offer. Many people are afraid of massage, so being set up in a public place with your chair massage gives people who have never experienced the gift of touch the perfect opportunity to do so in what they might consider a safer setting. Most people are pleasantly surprised to realize that massage therapy is a very calming and relaxing experience. It's almost guaranteed that you'll get callbacks from some of the people you meet at these events.
