The restaurant's history is a large part of its interest and charm, especially to me since I majored in anthropology and have done both pre-historic and historic archeology across the state. The Patterson Hotel, home of Peacock Alley, was built in 1910 by owner Ed Patterson, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It opened on New Year's Day of 1911, just in time for that year's legislative session. At the time, the Patterson's seven stories (later increased to ten) made it the tallest building in North Dakota. Described then as the most elegant hotel between Minneapolis and Seattle, the Patterson boasted 250 rooms and more private bathrooms than there were in the entire state!
