How well I remember the day I tried on my first pair of Birkenstock shoes. That was the first day that I was able to walk without feeling pain radiating from my knee up to my hip. Not that I'm ancient, by any means, but I suffered some knee and back problems after a fall and a car accident several years ago. As a result, I could hardly stand or walk for extended periods of time without experiencing significant pain.

After watching a demonstration for Birkenstocks, or "Birks" as people like to call them, on one of the television home shopping networks, I knew I had to try them. I placed my order and the rest, as they say, is history. Once I tried on the Birkenstock sandals I had ordered, I didn't want to wear any other shoes.

One of the unique features of Birkenstocks is the soft contoured footbed which enables the body weight to be evenly distributed over the whole foot. I can personally attest to the fact that this definitely gives excellent support and comfort to the foot and leg. It does take a little bit of getting used to because it's a different feel from your average shoe. In fact, the company recommends that you gradually increase your wearing time until you are comfortable with the shoes. After a week or so, I felt right at home in my Birks.

Birkenstocks are not cheap. After all, they are made in Germany. However, if you are experiencing any kind of foot, leg or even back pain, the relief they can provide is worth every penny. All I have to do is not wear my Birks for a day to remember how it used to be for me. Plus, Birkenstock shoes are very durable and can actually be repaired for continued wear.
