A political science professor recently posed a question to me. He wanted me to examine a scenario where Hitler defeated the Soviet Union in World War II. I was to look at how international politics would look different and if it were at all possible for it to be beneficial in the long term to the allied powers. That following is that analysis.

In the summer of 1942, Nazi Germany had a strategy that, if successful, would have changed the outcome of World War II severely. It’s debatable whether or not the defeat of the Soviet Union would have ultimately led to a total Nazi victory in Europe. One thing is for certain; there are a lot of ‘what ifs’ that can be considered. There are many forks in the road where one can speculate what would have happened had Germany defeated Russia. Could the Nazis have repelled the D-Day invasion? Would they have made another move on Great Britain? Would Hitler stop at Europe? If D-Day was still successful would the forces be strong enough to deal with Germany fighting a single front? The questions are endless. The answers are purely speculative, but fascinating to consider.

The only way these questions can truly be addressed is to approach the question as an alternative history. Plenty of alternative history novels exist about the post-World War II world. Most notably is “The Man in the High Castle” by Philip K. Dick. In that novel America is occupied jointly by the Nazis in the east and Japan in the west. In terms of international politics it’s a worst case scenario. The Nazis are allowed to continue their ethnic cleansing and after they finish the Jews they move on to Africa and continue their extermination policies with the indigenous people there.

Takeaways
  • Sometimes paying a costlier price early is beneficial long term.
  • The leaders during World War II lacked appreciation of our new ability to destroy ourselves.
Did You Know?
Winston Churchill urged President Truman to leave his troops in position in Germany in case they would have to be used against the Soviet Union.

Interesting conclusion. I think it would have been possible, but there are a couple of things I'm not sure would have happened. #1, I don't think The United States would have dropped atomic weapons on European soil. #2, I think after defeating the Soviet Union, Hitler would have strengthened the Western front and sued for peace with the allies. This last theory of mine is difficult to prove because although Hitler wanted peace with the Brits before the war, by the end he had gone crazy, issuing orders to attack when he knew they were hopeless, and after Stalingrad he simply turned his back on the German people. He believed that the Aryan race had close ties with the British and Nordic peoples, so if he had a position of strength I think it is at least possible that the Allies would have agreed to a cessation of hostilities; similar to Robbert Harris' book Fatherland. It would have been interesting to walk the streets of Germania. Justin

They wouldnt have dropped bombs on both Japan and Germany, After the real Japenese bombing, The goverment appologized, so if they did it both in Germany and Japan, theres no way they could appologize right?

If Hitler and Europe had won WW2 instead of the monster Stalin, America would not have been invaded by DNA-challenged Latinos who breed at roughly five times our rate. Soon they will have the political power to grant statehood to Mexico which has 2/3 of the population of the US. The spells the end of European culture in America. Get used to people using public streets as toilets because that is part of the Mexican culture. Get used to a third-world corrupt government. We brought this disaster on ourselves as Hitler and the Europeans in the 30s realized the threat of low-IQ, fast-breeding cultures in a Democracy. We murdered a great leader.

Interesting analysis. Even in your analysis, the atomic bomb is a GOOD thing, saving more lives than it actually takes. By the way, I disagree with your point that victors do not learn from their mistakes. I believe that WW II was a big catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement in America. Your statement that "The nations that came out the strongest morally after World War II were Germany and Japan. They saw the error of their ways because they lost," is incorrect. To the extent that Germany and Japan learned anything, it is due to the efforts of the American, British and French occupying forces. Oh, to the extent that "good" people make mistakes, often those mistakes are forced by the pressures exerted by the "bad" people who forced the conflict. In conclusion, the atomic bomb in the real WW II and in your interesting scenario is a good thing. In the real WW II, thank G-d we got it first.
