On Tuesday, radio personality Don Imus, in a poor man attempt at "shock jocking", referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos" while broadcasting his awful show "Imus In The Morning." The Rutgers team is made up of eight black women and two white women.
Imus Tangles with Controversy, Not Popular Enough for Public Boycott

It went down like this....

Don Imus: That's some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and --

Bernard McGuirk (executive producer/poor mans Gary Dell'Abate): Some hard-core hos.

Imus: That's some nappy-headed hos there. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some - woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like - kinda like - I don't know.

Apparently Mr. Imus in unfamiliar with freshman forward Heather Zurich

McGuirk: A Spike Lee thing.

Imus: Yeah.

McGuirk: The Jigaboos vs. the Wannabes - that movie that he had.

Imus: Yeah, it was a tough -

Charles McCord (co-host): Do The Right Thing.

McGuirk: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Imus: I don't know if I'd have wanted to beat Rutgers or not, but they did, right?

Sid Rosenberg (guest/ sports announcer): It was a tough watch. The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors.

Those guys are so gosh darn funny.

When confronted about the remarks, Imus responded with "people should relax and not worry about some idiot comment meant to be amusing."

Fair enough.

A Rutgers spokesperson issued the obvious comeback, "We agree with Mr. Imus that this was, in his own words, an "idiot comment."

If more people outside of the women's basketball organization begin to care about the comments, Imus may be subject to a battery of insincere public apologies to the black community and a two-week, all-expenses-paid stint in rehab. I heard that's what cured Michael Richards.

Alas, controversy is regional.

Listeners of the Kidd Chris Show (94.1 WSYP, Philadelphia) hear this kind of talk every day. Some of the forbidden terms have been given codes that only the listeners, who often sling webs, will know. And while some panic-stricken lawyers stand in the way of Speedy Woo, the show will never make the headlines for "controversy".

Why?

Because his audience gets it.

I'm frickin` retarded. Nappy-headed ho's are my friends. Spike Lee is an artist. Now, maybe nappy-headed ho's hold Spike Lee and their ethnicity 'holy.' That's good for them. I don't think the nation would want to stop listening to Imus because he used those words ... but then, maybe this is just the tip of the iceberg. Until Imus owns his own station, he is no Howard Stern.

I just don't get the fury. I am a woman and if someone wants to call me a nappy ho go ahead , whats the old saying sticks and stones. This is a mild comment and it was a terrible attempt at humor but there is a lot worse out there by comedians and musicians but here we have a racist, ageist firing of imus.

Imus doesn't get it. This is his normal way of speaking about blacks. How could it offend anybody? He went over the line. He needs to stop trying to hide behind Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, rappers or anyone or thing that he thinks will take the heat off him. Well it's not about them, this is his moment of shame and lets not confuse or muddy the subject trying to inject others in the mix. If CBS will fire someone for plagerism, why not fire him for not just racist but sexest degrading remarks. He didn't just randomly say this in jest, he singled out a paticular person (group of persons) some of which I might ad are white. Does white america understand they all make up Rutgers team. I'll bet he wasn't talking about the white team members, only the black. Let him apologize but also make him pay. He should pay each member of the team a years salary. I'll bet for the next 15 or 20 years he will really be sorry. That is the only the impact of what he said will soak in and matter

Rev.Sharp is forgivness not what the word says? he that stands in judgement becomes the judge and there is but on judge God...... is this not what Jesus declared? he should be fired if and if only there excist no racial discrimination from any any black americans and elsewhere could that be true? no .forgivness is a wonderful thing......... if anything and i cannot not call his punishment imus should invite this team into his home to eat.... oh but wait wasnt that what Jesus did eat with the sinner......... than he begin to know these people on a personal level and realize what wonderful people they are and than be truly sorry for his remark...but his remark is not as bad as the personal lynch mob that is after him and will find no satisfaction until they have brought him down so what will that acomplish? more hate and no forgiveness

the news just came out that Don Imus has been suspended for two weeks over the incident. Perhaps I underestimated how far-reaching this got. Still, incidents like these can be good for talking about the issue. The bad part is we should have been talking decades ago.

the question is did he offend his listeners, the demographic he is paid to entertain? I think the point Anthony is trying to make is that he is just a crappy dj that has no real power to change how people feel about each other. What he said doesn't make me think badly about the members of the Rutgers b-ball team, just him. It worries me more when a politican says crap like this, then you have to be concerned. People like Imus you should just ignore because all you do is give them rating boosts.

Don Imus needs to be relieved of his position IMMEDIATELY!! As a true act of faith on the part of MSNBC and it's sponsors he needs to be advised (once again) to resign. Either he resigns of his own accord or he should quite simply be fired. PERIOD. POINT BLANK. END OF STORY. He has definitely pushed the envelope before and it was only a matter of time before he crossed the line. And THIS is the line!! If this is his idea of comedy he should find another line of work. We already have a Howard Stern. A man should not have to apologize for his comments if they are from the heart and he believes it is "OK" for another white man to slam another member of the black race, either in public or in private, let him search his own soul to reason it out for himself rather than make some hollow apology after the fact to serve his own interests. Let him instead accept the responsibility for his words by excusing himself from the public spotlight, retiring to his ranch and hopefully for all of u
