How to Change Your Own Oil on a 2005 to 2007 Toyota Tacoma V6

You Can Do It, I Can Help

Changing your oil can be a very rewarding experience. Knowing how to do your cars general maintenance helps you appreciate and better take care of your vehicle.

Tools Needed:

· 14 MM wrench

· 6 quarts oil

· New Oil Filter and 1 new Crush washer

· Oil container to hold old
 oil

1. Drive the truck around to get it to its normal operating temperature. This ensures the oil is warm and will flow easier out of the engine.

2. Park on level ground.

3. Take your 14 MM wrench with your Oil catch container and slide under the truck. It would be a good idea to also have some old towels or rags around the area so none of the oil splashes out and stains your pavement. Place the catch can directly under the oil drain plug. Take your wrench and loosen the plug slightly.

4. Now with your fingers remove the bolt slowly and let the oil drain into the container. The old crush washer is most likely still stuck on the oil pan or has fallen into the drain container. You can pick it off after the oil had drained, or grab it out of the container. We will not be using it again though.

5. While the oil is draining from the oil pan, remove the oil cap and if you want you can also remove the dip stick.

6. Let drain a sufficient amount of time (20-30 minutes).

7. Remove the oil filter from the engine slowly. You'll need a cup to place under the black drain valve that is under the oil filter. The small amount of oil that is in the oil filter will spill into the silver cup then you can remove the black valve cover and let it drain into the cup. Wipe out the silver container that the oil filter is inserted.

Which one is the oil drain on a 2005 Tacoma. There seems to be two oil drains. The small under the engine and another one under the transmission. Please advise as to which one is the correct one to drain oil?

Seems to me disposing of the old oil is an important part of this process. What do people recommend?

In you're manual it states on how to cancel the light

The light will come on every 5,000 miles. It is a reminder light only. It will actually start to flash on start up for a few seconds a little before 5,000 miles just to let you know it is almost time for your 5,000 mile scheduled service. You can simply reset the light if it comes on before you want it to, but it WILL come on in another 5,000 miles.

Will the service engine light come on every 5k miles? Or will it come on when the engine "needs" an oil change? I have 3,300 miles, changed the oil once, and want to change it again...but don't want the light to come on at 5,000 miles for an unnecessary reason...

I believe (but not 100% sure) that during the time the dash lines are disappearing, if you let go of the button after 2 of the 5 have vanished, it will do what you ask. I have not tried this so don't hold me to it :)

Can you resent the light but for 3000 miles?

Turn the truck off. Then hold the trip button on the odometer and turn the key to the second on position but do NOT start the truck. You should see the odo turn to - lines. When all dash lines have disappeared you can let go and the light will be reset for another 5k miles.

I changed the oil just fine but how do i cancel the service engine light?

when you put the oil into the filter rotate it around so the oil soaks into the filter material.
