The Best Fall and Winter Hat Styles for Your Face Shape
As fall and winter approach, it is a great time to start shopping for a warm hat. But what style of hat suits your face shape? The ideal winter hat combines a great look with warmth. This guide will take the mystery out of shopping for a fall and winter hat.
Petite Body Frame
A big hat over powers. Instead of a large faux fur hat, choose a cute cape. A low crown and small rim makes the hat look in proportion to the rest of you.
Tall Body Frame
People who are tall can wear hats especially well. More elaborate styles of hats such as Russian or faux fur hats look best on a tall body frame.
A Square or Angular Face
Hats which have a rounded, full design work well with a square or angular face. Avoid tall, narrow hats which can make you look too angular. Hats with hard edges are to be avoided. A snood or hood and scarf with some volume is a good choice, lending softness to an angular or square face shape.
Oval Face
If you have an oval face, you can wear a variety of hat styles. There is no 'to avoid list'. However, choose a style that compliments your body type and complexion. One of my favourites is the simple knitted cap which can pulled down over the ears.
Round Face
Your hat choice should be opposite to that of people with square or angular faces. Instead of choosing rounded, voluminous styles, choose a more angular structured look. A knitted hat which has some structure is a great choice. For instance, try a square shaped hat with four sides.
Long Face
Hats with some width compliment a long face. A fedora with a wide brim is a good choice. A decorative accent at the brim is a great way to emphasize width.
Color is also important. Cool complexions are complemented by colors such as green, blue and violet. Warmer complexions look great in 'hot' colors such as hot pink, red or warm orange shades.
Of course, one of the most helpful gauges is provided by trying on a variety of hats. Choose a color and style that looks good in the mirror. Don't forget how it feels too - after all, a winter hat that doesn't keep you warm is not worth having!
