What if I told you your student (ages 16 - 24) can go to a really nice "boarding school", finish getting his/her high school diploma/GED if needed, learn employability and independent living skills, get free room and board, medical care, and so much more, and it won't cost you anything, in fact, they will pay your student a bi-weekly allowance to attend?

Would you want to know more about it? I did! I went to the orientation and had a tour of one of the facilities. My daughter is graduating from high school with some college already under her belt, this May. She is planning on joining the job corps. In her words, "Why would I want to pay for college when I can get paid to go instead?" She's a smart girl, takes after her mama!

So yesterday we went to see the Grand Rapids, Michigan facility, aptly named after the only president to come from Michigan, The Gerald R. Ford Facility. They just put a new girls dormitory in. My daughter will be sharing a brand new room with three other girls.

Each room has four beds with locking drawers under them, four closets with locks, a double sink area, and a toilet/shower in a separate room off their bedroom so girls can use the sinks and vanity area while someone is in the shower or using the toilet.

The boys are not so lucky, although they do have small televisions in their rooms; they have five to a room, and community bathrooms they have to walk to and share with several other rooms. Depending on the center, there could be up to seven in a room.

The girls will still be walking to the original 1964 building across a small parking lot to attend classes, eat meals, and use the gym, pool tables, and recreational facilities. During the day when classes are taking place the dorms are locked up and off limits to everyone. If someone is ill they must spend the day in the on-campus health facilities. When classes let out, the dorm doors are unlocked and the students are able to go to their rooms.

Did You Know?
Established in 1964, Job Corps has trained and educated more than 2 million young people to date, serving approximately 65,000 young adults each year.

Available education, how nice the facility is, etc varies widely by location. Considering the rep of Job Corps, no parent should want their child to have that on their resume for the rest of their life unless absolutely necessary.

Hey im in job corps right now its actually a really fun place to be i haven't been here long so my opinion could still be swayed but from what i can tell it seems fun. I came becuase i got expelled from school though and i had no place to go which is the reason alot of people are here very few are here after highschool graduation. With me and my ICL's (introduction to center life) 3 out of 15 actually have there high school diploma's.

My daughter is actually going there now and she loves it! Her myspace says, "Job Corps Rocks!" and after testing her she has been put on the fast track so she will be done in half the time so we are looking at six months to be a CNA and then she is transferring to New York job corps to complete her training and become a registered nurse! I am so glad I could help others in discovering the job corps!

i went to jobcorp back in 1989.and every thing was totally different.back then we had input numbers.my#was 399.we had got paid on fridays, and the way the dorms was.the girls was on the third floor.and the boys was on the second.also the laundry area was on the first floor.we did not have seperate dinning area from the gold.you could either eat on the east side.or the west side.iam very happy that they change a lot of things around for the better.actually i've gone to jobcorp twice.yhe second time after i had graduate from high school.i had graduated from the culinary arts area.on june,06,1990 was the first graduation in jobcorp history.and i graduated that day.trust me jobcorp is a great place so send your your child.
