At some point everyone gets the blues and feels down and out, but when this happens on a frequent basis there is cause for concern. There is help for everyone to help avoid and stabilize the chemicals in our bodies that cause depression. By adjusting our diets and eating at regular times of the day, this can keep our serotonin levels in balance and prevent depression. Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that stimulates calmness throughout our bodies. When we all have a well-balanced diet, this is our best defense for managing depression.

Super Foods for Fighting Depression

The following super foods can help manage anyone's depression.

Foods With Carbohydrates

In order to keep a person's serotonin production levels up, foods with carbohydrates are a great source. The lack of carbohydrates could cause a person's mood to change.

Foods With Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Fish, such as salmon and mackerel, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help prevent depression, heart disease, strokes, and possibly prevent the occurrence of some cancers. Salmon is highly recommended for the omega-3 fatty acids because salmon contains a mineral, selenium, an important antioxidant. When shopping for salmon, wild salmon is the preferred choice because it is higher in the omega fatty acids over farmed or Atlantic salmon.

Foods With Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another source of antioxidants. Vitamin E can be found in oils, such as canola oils. However, these oils will need to be used in moderation. Canola oil is high in vitamin E and is a healthier alternative over other oils for sauteing foods.

Thanks Hannah. Yes, I mentioned that in the last paragraph because I think so too, because most people who have the long bouts and deep depression this may not be the "cure all of cure alls" for them.

Great tips! I would also highly recommend a counseling professional, to talk about what may be causing the depression in the first place.
