One of the biggest worries that homeschool parents have is that their children will not be exposed to enough other people to develop the right social skills needed for life. We all have in our heads that stereotypical image of the shy homeschooler who is unable to talk to anyone else, keeps his head tucked down and is basically "weird". Fortunately, there is absolutely no need for your kids to turn out this way. Here's how to socialize your homeschooled children.1. Join a homeschool group. Nowadays, there are so many people homeschooling that it is relatively easy to find a group in your area. This is an ideal way to not only mix with other kids their age, but also to meet up with people who are going through similar experiences. Parents will benefit greatly as well!
2. Take a class. There is no reason why homeschoolers can't study outside the home in some areas. Not all parents will be experts at watercolor painting and sculpture, so why not let your kids take an extra-curricular class in these areas? Let your children decide what kind of class they want to take, be it Spanish or yoga and sign them up! It is a great experience for all involved.
3. Teach something. Do you have a special skill in some area that others would be interested in learning? Why not set up your own class and teach your skill? Your kids can either help you as teacher assistants or they can take the class themselves and count it toward their schoolwork.
4. Volunteer for a charity. It really doesn't matter where, let your children decide where they feel they could best help out. This might mean giving a little TLC to some lost puppies down at the dog shelter, or visiting with lonely old people in a home for the elderly. Either way, the kids will gain valuable experience in both caring and socializing!
5. Get a job. For kids who are old enough, a summer job can be the ideal way to learn better social skills. You not only have to learn to deal with other people, but also the politics of a work place. There is no need for a full-time job, one that requires a few hours every week is just fine. The extra spending money will come in handy, too!
