In our world of huge SUV's and even bigger gas prices, sometimes it's good to get back to the basics. Back to when things were more innocent. Namely, maybe it's time to ride a bike again. About four months ago I purchased a Charger electric bicycle, and I couldn't be more happy about it.

The Charger is a bike with a motor to put it basically, but really it is much more then that. Sure, it's got a motor, but it only works when you actually pedal, this bike is not a younger brother to a moped, no sir.

I did a lot of research when I initially decided that I wanted an electric bike, I'm a college student and it is the means of transportation that made the most sense to me. Once I found the Charger, I knew I had found my bike.

Here are some of the great things about the Charger:

Has four different settings, number one means that the bike's motor will add half of whatever force you pedal to your speed, number two adds the same force that you pedal, number three doubles the force, and number four triples it.

To activate the motor on the bike you have to enter a four digit code, so no unwanted riders speeding off with the motor on.

Even though it has a motor, most states consider it just as a normal bike, so no problems riding it on the sidewalk.

For safety the bike will only go up to 20 miles an hour on factory settings, so you know your child isn't going too fast and possibly hurting themselves. Though I have read that if you are determined enough there are ways to modify the sensor to allow you to go faster.

Now for a few drawbacks:

You have to order the bike online at the web address given at the bottom of the screen. IT isn't really cheap in comparison to normal bikes, though it's more economical then other electric bikes.

The chain that the motor uses to add power is too small in my opinion, and the one that comes with the bike comes loose too easily, so you'll want to replace it quickly.

All in all, I as a college student, and as someone that would rather charge my bike with 5 cents worth of electricity then pay 3ish dollars for gas, this is a product I can't live without. Heck it is good for the environment too!

I love my Charger EXCEPT: 1) The PWM control runs in the audible range, so the unequal assist requirement as you pedal causes a VERY annoying "wa-wa-wa-wa" noise. This is a really serious drawback to an otherwise neat design. 2) The center-pull brakes are just terrible. 3) The battery which came with the bike died after the second charge- I think they were a few years old from warehouse storage. I haven't replaced it yet. The power assist in proportion to your pedal effort feels like magic. Going up a steep hill feels exactly the same as riding on the level. Be VERY sure what their battery guarantee is before you buy this bike. The batteries are weird and you can't replace them with just anything with the right size and voltage; you have to use their (expensive) battery
