Today's world is a maze of inter-connections as ubiquitous as the cells in a human body. One of the tools for connecting with the world around us is the Internet, of course, but many argue that the Internet is mostly a mis-used tool. While it is an overgeneralization that the Internet is "mostly" a mis-used tool, there are still some improvements that can be made to the Internet and its content and the accessibility of that content. One major issue relating to content is pornography. One solution to the problem of too-easily accessed pornographic content can be Internet Content Channels.

Firstly, there are those who have argued that the easy accessibility of pornography on the Internet is an issue of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is, of course, protected by the Bill of Rights. Freedom of the press is another constitutionally protected right, but where do you find pornography in the convenience stores? Are the pornographic magazines up where anyone can see them, and are they sold to anyone who happens to find them and has the money for them? Obviously not. So clearly, efforts have been made to somewhat restrict that press issue, using common sense that children should not be exposed to such things and that adults who have no interest in such things should not be subjected unwillingly to them.

Yet any broad, truly effective effort to restrict the accessibility of pornography on the Internet has been loudly shouted down. Dispensing with conspiracy theories, it is obvious that the pornography industry is a billion dollar industry. Clearly pornography sells and, increasingly, research is showing that pornography is addictive. Cigarettes, alcohol, and illegal drugs are controlled due to the likelihood of the damaging addiction to them. Pornography must also be controlled and regulated.

Takeaways
  • the easy accessibility of pornography on the Internet is an issue of freedom of speech
  • Pornography must also be controlled and regulated
  • Internet content channels are a pragmatic and effective solution
