March 3rd - June 9th is National week of the oceans celebrating 28 years of educating adults and children alike about the ocean. It is centered in Florida with various learning programs.

Its program to appreciate, protect and use the ocean wisely has been recognized by the National Marine Educators Association. In 1984, a resolution sponsored by Congressman E. Clay Shaw and Senator Paula Hawkins was written into Public Law 98-274. The law represents a four-year program launched in Oceans 1981 and 1982 and endorsed by the National Marine Educators Association in 1982.

The oceans program is headed by renowned astronaut/aquanaut Scott Carpenter. He warns that "Life on dry land is dependent on the ocean and if the ocean dies, we die."

The nation is invited to participate annually in the April National Week of the Ocean and encouraged to event programs circled around the Exploring Mother Ocean theme.

In 1981 one hundred persons founded its program. 1982 memberships were being offered to individuals, families, sponsors, benefactors, corporations and honorees. The non-profit/educational category set up for schools, groups, museums and marine programs doubled by 1983. In 1984, overall membership doubled and new categories were offered to students, youth, educators and small businesses. Getting national attention it attracted others that were not from Florida. Members receive periodic newsletter and attract year-round activities in its support.

Whatever the reasons initially for joining the oceans program everyone gains in their education and knowledge within the oceans programs learning valuable skills, or to learn about the sea.

There are going to be many activities held all year long in conjunction with National Week of the Ocean 4/1 - 4/7, 2007 Sponsored by National Week of the Ocean, Inc.in cooperation with the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There will be eight weekends of "World of Water."

In theatres March 23rd "Sharks" produced, directed, written & edited by free diver Rob Stewart, who takes you into the most beautiful and treacherous seas for an in-depth education of the myth of sharks.
