Hue and Cry to Fire Don Imus

His Apology for "Racial Slur" Not Good Enough

Radio shock jock, Don Imus has apologized for calling members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" on his nationally syndicated radio program Imus in the Morning. Imus said the remarks made on his show were
Hue and Cry to Fire Don Imus
"insensitive and ill-conceived" and "thoughtless and stupid." He went on to say: "It was completely inappropriate, and we can understand why people were offended."

Bryan Monroe, president of the National Association of Black Journalists called for Don Imus to be fired over this latest incident, in a long string of outrageous bigoted remarks that have been made on Imus' show. Monroe, who also is the vice president and editorial director for Ebony and Jet magazines in Chicago, said: "Has he lost his mind? Those comments were beyond offensive. Imus needs to be fired. Today."

After Imus described Tennessee's players (also a predominantly black team) as "cute," his producer, Bernard McGuirk, went on to call the matchup "the Jigaboos vs. the Wannabees." A lot of people are incensed over these remarks as well; however, the reference comes right out of Spike Lee's 1988 film "School Daze," which included the musical number "Straight and Nappy" performed by the Jigaboos & Wannabees Chorus.

Imus is and always has been an equal opportunity insulter. He has repeatedly called Arabs "ragheads." He has called Hilary Clinton "Satan." He has called Bill Clinton "a rapist." No, wait - that was McGuirk. In 2000, Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page, appeared on Imus to have Imus take a pledge to refrain from further racist comments.

Here's part of the transcript from that incident: (Aug. 17, 2001, "All Things Considered" - National Public Radio):

My question is where was Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton when these boys needed their support for the false accusations made against them in a racial means? Why are they not going on TV with the boys on the Today Show and sticking up for them and letting people of all races that this type of behavior is uncalled for? I'm not saying Imus is by all means an angel, I'm just saying, take a look at all issues and the people that are making the statements and their credibility. Because Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are no angels either by no means. I am a Hispanic/White man, have friends that are black and one friend that is a Turkish Moslem, we talk...They understand and respect my views, as I do theirs. We learn allot from each other coming from different cultures and backgrounds. I wouldn't trade them for anything. So use your brain and don't be driven by these hate mongers Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Maybe as americans, we ought to show these network giants who really has the

Look, I have seen both sides of it. I have gone into a store in a predominately black community and have been disrespected my the residents that live in that community. I have also seen the ugliness that comes from the white (Caucasian) communities. Imus may have hurt the feelings of some of those that felt his words were over the line. And then you have proclaimed civil rights leaders Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton lighting fires all over this country, Is not as productive as talking about it and learning from what was said on the Imus Show. They are men of power stirring the pot as opposed to bringing all of us together for the sake of equality and making us stronger Americans. Lets take a moment and look at the three Duke Lacrosse players that have been fighting a legal battle for the passed two years over a Black women falsely accusing the three young white men for rape and racial innuendo, which was later proven that she made false statements and made the whole thing up. My

UPDATE - MSNBC fired Imus today

It just goes to show that in all these years nothing has changed. Until we treat ourselves with respect, how can we expect anything more from any one else. We've gone from colored to black to african american, but we can't stop calling each other the N word. Why should we expect them to?

MSNBC should apologize for Keith Olbermann, not Imus. Imus is the only thing good on that entire pathetic network.
