This article contains photos and short videos. During the open house in the spring of 2006, visitor learned during tours of the facility about weather forecasting, how the forecasting is done and were able to watch several weather balloon launches.

The Gaylord NWS station is responsible for coverage of the entire northern half of Michigan and the Great Lakes (several thousand miles of coastline) which makes it one of the most important stations the Weather Service/NOAA operates. Over 4,000 marine forecasts are issued each year. If you operate a vessel in the Great Lakes, you're safety is their concern.
